In the center of this historic square, in between the former slave market and the clock tower monument, rises the statue monument to the founder of the city of Cartagena, Pedro De Heredia. He was quite an enigmatic man. He moved to the New World after killing 3 of the six men who tried to kill him in Madrid. After founding the city, he signed pacts of friendship with the natives of the islands nearby, began the looting of the Indian graves close to the river, and led several expeditions. He died at sea on his way to Spain to appeal the sentence handed down to him by the courts for various accusations. These included the abuse of the native population and misuse of royal funds. Apparently, this is popular place to begin the local walking tours. Various vendors around the square around the statue selling everything from beer to sweets to fruits.
