Batería De Castillitos - Review

After a ride full of twists and turns, when you finally reach the Bateria de Castillitos, it is a revelation! Castillitos is situated at an altitude of 250 meters, and its facade was built out like an castle medieval following a historicist style with influences of eclecticism and modernism. Home to 3 large cannons, the castle was built as a military defence structure and is fairly new. While there, do explore the underground tunnels and take in the magnificent views of the coastline.

  • Beware of the road to the top. It's not too difficult but might be for inexperienced drivers. The trip on its own is exciting and makes what waits at the top even better. The view of the bay and the city of Cartagena is very nice. Very windy but not a cold wind, even in September. The castle itself is amazing. There were very few tourists (maybe one or two, and a group arrived when we left) and this makes the whole experience of an abandoned castle even better. You're free to go wherever you want and the parking and entrance is free, there is no-one there. No guides or staff or anything like that. I would really recommend visiting this place!

  • This is very historic, beware of the road to the top of the mountain where the guns are, just take it easy, you will meet other cars coming up or going down. You can use pushchairs but it is hard work. Look out for your children, remember it is on top of a mountain. Not suitable for disabled people, although as I say you can use a pushchair but it will be hard work. Parking can be tight. Entry is free. There are no amenities. On the way back down in the village, there is a bar/cafe you can get some thing to eat and drink plus toilet facilities. Take a camera.

  • Great unspoilt place. Quite a trek especially as it was about 34°. My tips is to take water with you (unlike us). Great views & you'll love the road up there if you like a big drop next to you

  • Well worth a visit. Take plenty of water and some food. Well worth exploring all areas with a good torch just be careful in the dark areas and tunnels as the ground can be uneven. Also bits of metal can be sticking out the walls at various heights. The ground below the turrets has hollows and channels. Be mindful of young children keep them close it is not safe for them to venture off. It is a wonderful place with some amazing views.

  • Remote but well worth the trip. Just a pity that it hasn't been a bit more cared for and turned into a real tiurust attraction. Free and open 24/7. Fantastic views
