Opened way back in 1935, Treak Cliff Cavern is a show cave. It is a site from where the ornamental mineral Blue John continues to be excavated. Being a part of Castleton Site of Special Scientific Interest, Blue John is not mined from the show cave, but is extracted in small amount to make bowls, jewelleries, and ornaments. Upon visiting Treak Cliff Cavern, you will be able to see fascinating formations of stalagmites, stalactites, and flowstone.
Treak Cliff Cavern Reviews & Ratings
Outstanding visit to the Peak District crowned with tour of the mines at Freak Cliff cavern. Tour was led by the brilliant and very knowledgeable Olivia. Highly recommended. A thoroughly interesting and enjoyable day.
IMO the best of the Castleton show caves. Starting with the 'mined' part of the cave, the tour takes you on a geological exploration of the formation of Blue John, before then entering the untouched realms of stalactites and stalagmites further into the cave. Some amazing natural chambers and beautiful, other-worldly formations.
Very impressive shop and cafe, well lit and the blue John cake is amazing
Very interesting place to visit in a very nice part of the country.
Had a nice cup of tea with filtered cave water. Seats outside so you can picnic stop too.
