The Heritage of Cebu Monument is an illustration of sculptures made of concrete, bronze, brass and steel portraying scenes that shaped Cebu city. The construction of the monument began in July 1997 and it was finished in December 2000. Built by local artist Eduardo Castrillo who along with Senator Marcelo Fernan successfully built the monument with donations from other private individuals and organizations. Intricately detailed statues depict the memorable fight of April 21, 1521 in the island of Mactan where native chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Other sculptures show the local revolutions against the Spanish. The sculptures that portray the conversion to Christianity of Rajah Humabon and his followers are quite interesting too, and the Cebuano veneration of Sto. Niño is a sheer delight for passers-by.
