Sukhna Lake - Review

This lake is a beautiful artificial lake in the foothills of the Shivalik Range. This is basically a rain fed lake and is created by pulling out the water of the stream there. The name of the lake is derived from the name of the stream, which was known as the Sukhna Choe.

The credit for the creation of the lake goes to the two great engineers, Le Corbusier and P.L. Verma of Chandigarh. To preserve the beauty and the authenticity of the lake, motor boats in it were prohibited and also the movement of vehicles across the top of the dam was prohibited. The lake is attached to a golf course that is again attached to the Rock Garden of Chandigarh.

The roof of the Sukhna Dam is a very popular place with all types of people. The serious walkers come here to work out regularly in the morning or evening. It is also an ideal place to spend some good time with your family and children and it is also a perfect place for people who have a passion for painting or photography. There is nothing like capturing the perfect view of dawn or dusk or the cloudy skies from here.

Sukhna has membership facilities and it has all the modern amenities like a gym, swimming pool, tennis court with a grass and a synthetic field, indoor games and lawns. You can also enjoy boating, sculling, surfing, skiing, etc. this lake with its longest channel for rowing and yachting events in Asia, was the venue for the Asian Rowing Championship. It also has a sanctuary which is house for many beautiful migratory birds such as Siberian Ducks, Storks and cranes. The lake has also been declared as a protected wetland by the Government of India.

During summers many men and women come here to provide voluntary services for almost 3 months. It is almost like a ritual here. Many regional events and festivals also take place here like the Mango Festival in which various types of mangoes are put on display.

  • No place as Serene as this. Love it every time I go there. Mornings are the best time. In the evening the place gets crowded but they have activities for kids specially. The boat options are slightly costly to say. Parking outside can take time. The place is heavily crowded on special occasions like new year, festivals etc. Better not to go during such times but then all other places are crowded too. Overall a great place to find peace, to be with friends and family and have fun moments. Food options are okish. Nothing lavish to say. Don't throw garbage in the lake. Please please please.

  • Best tourism place, cool and awesome place for sitting and walking. In 2015 I was here for my exam. Early morning I reached here and enjoyed a lot. It was the first time when I found cool and super place in Chandigarh. It is second time when I'm writing my experience for this lake. Lot of things changed from 2015 to 2018. It is no so crowded as past. In other way I'd say due to non managing of this lake people love to visit Rock garden instead.
