The Government Museum & Art Gallery dates back to the most important year in Indian History, the year of independence 1947. It is one of the most important museums of India which houses a fantastic collection of Gandharan sculptures, Pahari and Rajasthani miniature paintings. Before the partition all these objects, paintings, sculptures and decorative forms were kept in the central museum of Lahore, the former capital of Punjab. In 1948, all these objects were divided and a part of the whole amount of objects was given to India which mainly consisted of Gandhara School paintings and sculpture and some Mughala and Pahari styles of paintings. These were first kept in Amritsar, then Shimla, Patiala and then finally shifted to Chandigarh.

Of all the museums in India, this is a very popular one not only because of the exclusive collection that it boasts of but for many other reasons. The location of the gallery in the heart of the city with the wonderful backdrop of the Shivalik Range is the main reason for its popularity. The Chandigarh College of Art is a part of the vast complex here. The building in itself is an attraction. The famous architect of the British Period, Le Corbusier designed it himself and it was established under the efficient guidance of Dr. M.S. Randhawa who was a great patron of art and was the then commissioner of Chandigarh.

The museum is divided into four sections out of which the art gallery is the largest, the other three being, the Chandigarh Architecture Museum, The Natural History Museum and the National Gallery of portraits.
