About Botanical Park Of Crete, Chania
Looking at this 20 hectare park, 18km from Chania, it’s hard to imagine this lush wonderland was ever a victim of fire… which happened in 2003; there’s a centennial olive tree here commemorating the fire. The highlights of the park are:
- 150 species of fruit trees; and the dozens of herbs, medicinal and ornamental plants that Cretan mountains are famous for.
- Animals such as birds (around the lake area), butterflies, wild goat, hares, badgers, the Cretan rock ferret, the Cretan weasel and tree frogs.
- The Amphitheare, which can be hired for presentations, wedding receptions, small concerts, and Cretan folklore evenings of music and dancing.
- The restaurant with a majestic view of the mountains.

Botanical Park Of Crete, Chania Reviews - Write a Review
Absolutely fantastic botanical garden. Unique in it's diversity and layout. While walking on the single path you wind down and later up the slope of a valley. We were lucky to visit in the Autumn as many fruit trees were dropping their ripe fruits on the ground. I thankfully saved some delicious fruits from rotting away.... they were delicious.
This is one of my favourite places in the world. It's like a garden of eden... You will spend hours there without noticing, among wonderfully varied plants. This place is huge so you very occasionally see other people. The restaurant is also quite good and the view from the restaurant is breathtaking. The restaurant serves locally grown fruit and herbs.
Visited the park several times, very much! A lot of plants, trees, the whole route is equipped with benches and places for halts. If you follow the route unhurried, then you can walk for 2-3 hours. At the entrance you can equip - water, some fruits, caps, hats and walking poles. The local restaurant is best left at the end of the route, after the walk you can have a delicious dinner, the chef is good.
The Botanical Garden is another must see on the Island. Make sure your Camera is loaded and has enough capacity for pictures. Beside the plants you will see also some animals. We got also a bottle of water with our tickets (twice as cool!) My compliment to all the work which must be done here to keep this up in such a good state. Best mediterran botanical garden I've seen.
It is well worth taking half a day to go here. Not only are the grounds beautiful, well laid out, with a beautiful walk through a rich collection of plants and animals but there is also an amazing restaurant with food made from local produce that you won't find elsewhere. You can go to the restaurant without going to the park but you'd be missing out on a great experience. The food and entrance are inexpensive, and the staff friendly. My top tip - beat the crowds and the heat and opt for a late lunch around 3pm then head into the park afterwards.
