This is the one of the city’s most colorful and vibrant places. The market is also known as the Historic City market or the Center Market and is declared a National Historic Landmark. If you want to know how the people talk and how they are originally, you should come to this place and you will get an idea of everything!

This market is the oldest complex in the city and covers the longest area as well. Initially this was the place known as The Beef Market as this is where the beef sellers used to put up their stalls and even sleep there sometimes. It was also the place where social gatherings used to take place and people used to come together and interact with everyone. At present, this place has expanded much more and here you get all that you want from jewelry, clothes to food and everything.

This is the central position of the city and the main market building is the best architectural example you will find here. The market is set up on a raised platform with stairs and has that combination of all English and Roman styles of designing. The similar sheds make it look like all the shops have only a single roof and these also have a Japanese touch to them. The color is also very bright and goes with the nature of the market. This is thus one place which you have to pass at least once if you are staying in the city.

Old City Market Reviews & Ratings

  • Beautiful place. Loads to offer. From small trinkets to scrumptious smelling food delights! Vendors were all friendly and approachable. If you enjoy handmade things and yummy delicious food and all that historic feel.... this is a place certainly not to be missed. Occasionally you would see the horse carriages tour going around and it's definitely a wonderful sight!

  • Some of the best seafood in Charleston and reasonable prices. Has good views of the bay and steps away from the 211 bus stop. Our waitress was knowledgeable and helpful and we received just the right amount of attention. It's best to make a reservation but sometimes they don't answer the phone and the online system doesn't work. The happy hour specials are only served at the bar. You like this place and would probably go regularly if we lived closer then 1200 miles.

  • A beautiful market full of one of a kind gifts and unique artwork! There’s also good good and drinks. The parking isn’t too bad but I’ve only come during the slower seasons.

  • We took our 5 year old grandson for fun to the night market. There are throngs of people, yummy smells wafting through the air from the nearby restaurants, a variety of musical entertainment from the street performers, and the clip clip of the horses pulling the carriages around. He was thoroughly entertained. We all loved it.

  • I am from Charleston and I've been here numerous times, but it's the first time with my wife. We bought a few items and the vendors were not pushy. Wares were about what you would see in a flea market, but a bit more upscale.
