They say this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of architecture. This exquisitely resolved building has housed the tunic (Sancta Camisia) of the Blessed Virgin Mary since the ninth century period - making it a leading pilgrimage center. It is a triumph of Gothic architecture. The highlights of this church are as follows:

  •  The two flying buttresses
  •  The mismatched West spires
  •  The rose windows and the nine incredibly ornate Portals
  •  A magnificent choir screen
  •  A 16th-century agriculture clock
  •  The labyrinth
  •  The beautiful stained glass windows
  •  The 105m bell tower, is that tallest still standing Romanesque steeple in the world

You can also climb the 350 steps stairs north tower, for a fee, but the view is totally worth it; access is from behind at the Cathedral  bookshop.

You may also enter the cathedral crypt for a fee but tours are guided only.

  • Three euros to enter the crypt.
  •  €7.5 to enter the north tower.
  • Entry is free.

  •  The tower closes at 5:30 PM.
  •  Visits to the crypt are by guided tour only; the crypt is closed on Sundays and holidays.
  •  The labyrinth is open only on Fridays.

  • Get to there on foot.

  • Le Parvis
  • Creperie La Picoterie

  • Haven't been since a family holiday 50 years ago. I appreciate the architecture and scale better now. Cleaning of the interior in progress in wonderful. The stained glass windows are extraordinary and worth the visit for themselves.

  • Very impressive, a gigantic cathedral very ornate, a jewel in stone and tainted glass. The feeling of awe is dominant. One asks himself why on earth did they build so big. Even nowadays the whole population of Chartres (about 40.000) can fit inside and did on the occasion of a visit of the pope. It is a formidable achievement of human ingenuity and artistic sense. A must-visit.

  • Enormous medieval gothic cathedral in the heart of the old center of Chartres. Entrance is free except museum and catacombs. If you like stained glass, expect to stay engaged for hours - huge, old, and magnificent. Pilgrimage site so be respectful. Highlights of treasures include Mary's veil. Cathedral is open late in August and crowds are low after 7:30PM otherwise expect to have a huge amount of traffic - but even then, not nearly as bad as Notre Dame in Paris but even more magnificent glass here!

  • I visited this famous cathedral yesterday. It was cold and not much sun, my decision on the time of the year but it was nice! If you are into stained glass, this cathedral is the real treat.

  • I rarely go inside a cathedral because most look more or less the same. The numerous wall carvings inside this cathedral gives an artistic touch. There was also a performance inside and the soft colourful lighting illuminated the whole place. It was lovely!
