Chartres Cathedral - Review
They say this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of architecture. This exquisitely resolved building has housed the tunic (Sancta Camisia) of the Blessed Virgin Mary since the ninth century period - making it a leading pilgrimage center. It is a triumph of Gothic architecture. The highlights of this church are as follows:
- The two flying buttresses
- The mismatched West spires
- The rose windows and the nine incredibly ornate Portals
- A magnificent choir screen
- A 16th-century agriculture clock
- The labyrinth
- The beautiful stained glass windows
- The 105m bell tower, is that tallest still standing Romanesque steeple in the world
You can also climb the 350 steps stairs north tower, for a fee, but the view is totally worth it; access is from behind at the Cathedral bookshop.
You may also enter the cathedral crypt for a fee but tours are guided only.

Chartres Cathedral, Chartres Reviews
Stunning stained glass, recently cleaned stonework! Known for its deep blue stained glass windows of which the secret has been long ago lost, Chartres Cathedral sits atop a hill overlooking the Eure valley. It is visible for miles around and its image is said to inspire pilgrims to continue their journey. The interior stonework has been beautifully cleaned and renovated in recent years and as of autumn 2018 the cathedral is absolutely stunning to visit. There is an underground car park and lots of shops and eateries nearby, making Chartres Cathedral and the city itself an excellent day's visit.
Enormous medieval gothic cathedral in the heart of the old center of Chartres. Entrance is free except museum and catacombs. If you like stained glass, expect to stay engaged for hours - huge, old, and magnificent. Pilgrimage site so be respectful. Highlights of treasures include Mary's veil. Cathedral is open late in August and crowds are low after 7:30PM otherwise expect to have a huge amount of traffic - but even then, not nearly as bad as Notre Dame in Paris but even more magnificent glass here!
Very intricate cathedral with a rich history dating back to the 1200s. The stained glass is quite beautiful, and there are a lot of architecture to be marvelled at. It is free to enter, but be sure to park a bit outside the town and just walk in as there are no easy parking within the small town. Rick Steve's has an amazing guide to this cathedral if you can get your hand on a copy.
I rarely go inside a cathedral because most look more or less the same. The numerous wall carvings inside this cathedral gives an artistic touch. There was also a performance inside and the soft colourful lighting illuminated the whole place. It was lovely!
An amazing visit. Chartres is such a beautiful city. The cathedral is one of carefully executed works which depict the awesome powers of creativity. Each touch of man on this edifice is meticulously laid out. From interior to exterior this cathedral is soon amazing. The crypt was a bit cold because I visited in spring but maybe it could b warm in winter. It has also many amazing things to see. The entry and guided tour of the crypt is not free. But just a small fee.
