They say this is one of the greatest achievements in the history of architecture. This exquisitely resolved building has housed the tunic (Sancta Camisia) of the Blessed Virgin Mary since the ninth century period - making it a leading pilgrimage center. It is a triumph of Gothic architecture. The highlights of this church are as follows:
- The two flying buttresses
- The mismatched West spires
- The rose windows and the nine incredibly ornate Portals
- A magnificent choir screen
- A 16th-century agriculture clock
- The labyrinth
- The beautiful stained glass windows
- The 105m bell tower, is that tallest still standing Romanesque steeple in the world
You can also climb the 350 steps stairs north tower, for a fee, but the view is totally worth it; access is from behind at the Cathedral bookshop.
You may also enter the cathedral crypt for a fee but tours are guided only.

Chartres Cathedral, Chartres Reviews - Write a Review
Definitely a must see. The town is quite charming. I love the Cathedral. There is so much history. You just think that every stone of the church might have some secret hidden behind it.
SIMPLY AMAZING! If you have the opportunity to get out of Paris, make sure you go to Chartres to visit the cathedral. My favorite part is the original stained glass, which is very rare as most churches were ravaged by the nazis. The citizens of Chartres hid all of the original stained glass and returned it after WWII.
Greatest masterpiece of Gothic architecture with unrivaled stained glasses, exterior sculptures that survived miraculously untouched by the ravages of Revolution and World Wars. Simply the most beautiful work of art I've ever seen in my life and that includes the city itself (truly gorgeous, as pictures show).
Anne -Marie - you made the history & the architecture come alive with your tour of the cathedral & the lower church! Spine tingling! Learned so much. This is not a quick stop spot! Take the time to appreciate 900 years of history. It's a glorious place. Seeing on going restoration is so encouraging but may I suggest that there should be a portion left as evidence of times past. If you are interested in the Labyrinth ( definitely worth it if you can arrange your visit) it is uncovered on Fridays only & you want to walk it.
It is a powerful place that celebrates the feminine in spirituality. Unfortunately the labyrinth is covered by chairs but leave a comment requesting access to the amazing experience that is currently denied.
