This remarkable museum was found by 10 empowering leaders of Chattanooga in the year 1983. The leaders were Roy Noel, Jacola Goodwin, Sallie Crenshaw, Leonard Wellington, Levi Moore, Agnes Locke, Elizabeth Champion, Rayburn Traughber, Catherine Kimble and Williams Banks. The museum was established to let people of Chattanooga know about the significant contribution of African American in the development of the city and also in American history and culture.
At present, the mission of the museum is to educate people about the cultural, educational and artistic excellence of African and African American heritage.
