Arignar Anna Zoological Park - Review
Slap on some sunscreen and head out to the Arignar Anna Zoological Park, or VandalurZoo as it’s commonly known. Created in 1855, it was India’s first ever zoo and is home to 2,553 species of flora and fauna. Spread over a massive 1,265 acres of dry, evergreen forests, the animals are housed in specially created open, wet and dry, island type enclosures with hidden walls. These enclosures mimic the natural habitats of these animals, birds and reptiles. The park is located in Vandalur, about 15 kilometers from Chennai Airport. If you look at the eastern or western most parts of the park, you will be greeted by the clear waters of the Hassan and Otteri lakes. Taking a trip to this park is literally wild fun and a great way for children and adults alike to explore nature and see animals in their natural environment.
The zoo has more than 100 exhibits of different kinds of mammals, birds, amphibians and reptiles. A few of the zoos inhabitants are barking deer, jaguars, baboons, otters, bears, giraffes, lemurs, vultures, emu and cassowary to name just a few. The park contains 138 species of plants, including a eucalyptus tree. By taking a walk through the forest, you’re bound to see at groups of glittering butterflies colouring the sky as the dense vegetation is home to 56 different species of the insect. You can explore the safari parks and study animals in their natural environment.
Different lion, deer and elephant parks offer you a chance to witness these beautiful beasts coexisting in their respective parks. There are two aviaries, where flamingos, seagulls, painted storks, night herons, teals, and storks can be seen between October and February every year. There’s also a lusciously green walk through aviary, home to 150 birds of 13 different species. You can walk through and see the explosion of colours that are these exotic birds, such as the kingfisher, red-whiskered bulbul, peacocks and partridges as well as shiny, slinky reptiles and amphibians. A crocodile house is sure to thrill, with the sly looking reptiles leering out from under the surface of the waters behind their enclosures. A serpentarium includes around 104 snakes, including cobras, which are kept in an air conditioned environment complete with a hot spot. A shark shaped aquarium at the zoo houses 31 species of fresh water fish.
At the entrance visitors are screened and are not allowed to take snacks and food inside the zoo, however milk and biscuits are allowed if accompanied by small children. Cycles are available for hire and there are many coaches available for visitors who prefer not to walk. A hospital for animals that have been rescued from the wild and also to treat sick animals from the zoo is set up in the area. It’s advisable to set foot into the zoo early in the morning so as to evade the sun which can make one feel warm and tired.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park, Chennai Reviews
Awesome zoo. You can have a great time whether its with family or friends. Going with a big gang would be great fun to this place. The zoo is well maintained and tidy. Lots of animals, birds, snakes for sight-seeing. A good place to click photos with these creatures. Children will really love to hangout here. Huge place so you can plan for an entire day-outing to visit here.
Nice place inside Chennai for a family day out.. Various animals, birds, snakes are kept in their natural habitats. Inside the corridor, bicycles can be hired for easy transport; big groups can opt for battery cars! Full of fun. Especially children will be left full of awe! Nice food canteens are also available. Management is also keen enough to keep the campus plastic pollution free. Liked it! 5 stars..
We were disappointed with our visit to the zoo. We went to this zoo in the evening and we didn't get to see most of the animals. It was around 4:30pm and the tiger, leopard and other such animals were already inside the shelter. They were not in the cage so we didn't get to see them. The zoo is quite big and I suggest you to rent a bicycle. They provide bicycle inside the zoo. Also they charge double money if you want to go with your phone. So if you are going with your family I suggest you take as less phones as you can or leave your phones in your vehicles. The animals have large cages so you're not gonna get a good picture if they are far away from you which most of the time they are. Try to visit this place in the morning then maybe you'll be able to see all the animals.
Wear comfortable shoes 👟 because you will have to walk 🚶 a lot but if you know how to ride a bicycle 🚲 or are rich enough to go for the safari experience, then, you can comfortably watch the entire zoo through those mediums of transport. What you will desperately need is to carry some food 🍲 items and also, research about whether certain animals are in for the season for example Butterfly 🦋 section is closed 🔐 this season around. For the food 🍲 part, there are some stores available but the chances of you getting enough to film your stomach is pretty low 👇. There is no way this place is not going to be crowded, so, mentally prepare yourself for that. Please don't trash the place and be one of those perverts who goes there to irritate women 🚺. Hope you have a great visit! 😊 🙏
Had a wonderful time with my family here. The place is vast and nicely maintained. The entry fee is 50 per adult, 20 per child (above 5 yrs), which is very reasonable. For still cameras (including mobile phone camera) the charges are 25 and for video cams, it's 150. To roam inside, there are plenty of options: Golf carts at 100 per hour per adult (seat), Safari rides (Lion & Deer) at 100 per hour per adult (seat), bicycles at 25 per hour for normal and 75 per hour for battery ones. No doubles allowed though. There is a special arrangement to carry children with a separate basket attached to the bicycle. This was very helpful for us. The visibility of animals is relatively good, compared to other zoos. Big ones like elephants can be spotted if they come nearer to the viewing areas. It takes a good 2-3 hr ride on bicycle to cover all the places. Have cafes and snacks on 2-3 places and lot of benches and chairs in all the places to sit and relax. A must visit for people in Chennai. You'll definitely enjoy the visit. Don't forget to choose a cooler day to get the best out of the visit.
