Kundrathur Murugan Temple - Review

Perched picturesquely atop a hill, the Kundrathur Murugan Temple or South Thanigai, is said to be that place where Lord Subramaniar or Murugan stayed, as and when he travelled to Tiruttanigai. It derives its second reference as South Thanigai from the fact that the statue of Lord Murugan is erected facing the northward direction. Further, the temple’s significance lies in its being “the only Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu where the God is standing in a north facing direction”. The temple is another brilliant construction from the reign of the Cholas.

Kundrathur Murugan Temple, Chennai Reviews

  • Temple is of unique in nature near chennai You can park car down small hill and walk nicely or take car also up hill Small hill and view from top, amazing surroundings Temple is not much crowded except Shasti days. The temple is on a small hillock. The short ascend is not a big deal even for a 60 year olds. Even otherwise, there is another road way to reach the top. The approach is not all that clean and hygienic but the temple is well maintained and the crowd is considerable. The outer ring road that connects Nemilichery/Pattabiram and vandalur is closeby. One can come through this route too. Otherwise, the road to kunrathur from porur is traffic prone. Yes, kunrathur is now highly populated. The deity is with Valli and Deivanai and the darshan is divine. Would like to visit again. Wonderful place.

  • I stay near to this temple, Peaceful and Wonderful ambience, Visiting this temple on Tuesdays are most advisable.... You can visit other two temples (Shivan and Vishnu) nearby.

  • One of the oldest temples built for Lord Murugan. A must place visit for worshippers.

  • Kundtrthur Sri Subramanya Swamy temple situated on a hill top enroute to kundtrthur Thiruneermalai road, it's a Chola period temple. Main deity Sri Subramanya Swamy facing north with Valli and Deivanai.it is believed that lord Murugan stayed here from Thiruporur to Thiruttani on his travel. Kundtrthur is the birthplace for famous poet Sri Sekkizar.

  • Earlier when we visited years ago, only steps had to be climbed .Now there is a pucca road you can drive up to the temple. Very nice temple.
