Perched picturesquely atop a hill, the Kundrathur Murugan Temple or South Thanigai, is said to be that place where Lord Subramaniar or Murugan stayed, as and when he travelled to Tiruttanigai. It derives its second reference as South Thanigai from the fact that the statue of Lord Murugan is erected facing the northward direction. Further, the temple’s significance lies in its being “the only Murugan temple in Tamil Nadu where the God is standing in a north facing direction”. The temple is another brilliant construction from the reign of the Cholas.

  • Located near Chennai and the kundrathur name is only fame because of this lord Murugan temple. In front of the temple you can park your vehicles absolutely free. No entrance ticket. More than 50 steps to reach the temple from ground. Not suggested for old age people. Very calm and nice temple but not clean.

  • If you like visiting temples, then Kundrathur Murugan Temple should be on your circuit. I was fortunate to visit on a muhurtha-naal, and I got to see seven simultaneous weddings! The weddings were the opposite of the usual super-massive Indian wedding. The bride-groom pairs each occupied a solemnizing space of less than 10' by 10' (no kidding) framed by a bamboo scaffolding with flowers. Each had a small crowd of well-wishers. Pilgrims and well-wishers mingled. Wedding rituals were done and dusted in twenty minutes. Short, simple, charming, and in a temple on top of a hill surrounded by a forest. What could be more romantic? Like many temples in India, access is not easy. There's a long, winding, garbage-strewn, traffic-jammed, chaotic road leading from the main road to the temple. You age a full year in the one hour it takes you to get there, and then once inside the temple, you recover the lost year.

  • Hill top murugan temple with a good view..... very near to outer ring road. Clean and tidy surroundings.

  • Is an Popular lord Murugan temple in Chennai. is very peace full and natural place and really superb...

  • A small hill temple located on the outer ring road.. Old temple you can reach the top either by steps or you can take road which takes you to the top near the temple.. Devotional place.. Crowded on important days..
