La Cite De La Mer is a maritime museum in Cherbourg city of France. Built in 1933, this marvellous museum tells the tale of Man’s adventure under the sea. The museum is located in the Cruise terminal of Cherbourg, and was reopened in 2002 as a scientific and historical museum. One of the major attractions of La Cite De La Mer, is the Titanic exhibition, dedicated to the majestic streamliner and its entire journey from its inception to destruction. The Redoutable, French Navy’s first SSBN submarine is kept here, which makes it the world’s largest submarine in the world open for public exposition. You can also listen to the Captain of the submarine talking about his life on board and sharing his experiences. The museum also has a 10 metres high and 8 metres wide, cylindrical aquarium, which displays the successive marine life forms in order of the depth at which they exist. There is a fascinating underwater expedition for the visitors, inside a digitized building. Highlights and must sees include:

  • The building is the old terminal for the large ocean liners of yesteryear. This in itself is a treasure. The old Titanic story is housed in a section which also overlooks the new cruise ship terminal. There is a full days visit here if you see all the attractions, the nuclear submarine is fascinating, the aquarium is full of fantastic creatures in large tanks. There are exhibits everywhere. This is well worth a visit.

  • Brilliant place to visit. Seeing the luggage hall where people who came into the railway station below, were checked before boarding trans Atlantic liners. The Titanic exhibition is amazing. The submarine which you can visit. All part of many fantastic attractions. Well worth the entrance fee.

  • Brilliant place to have a day out for you and the kids. You can go inside a submarine, you see what it was like on the titanic. Also an aquarium, like a sealife centre. Free car parking. Restaurant, and a gift shop. All around English and French language's. Worth the vist.

  • Brilliant for a day out with the children but the aquarium is very small would love to see big tanks for the fish. The brochure is a bit misleading

  • Fantastic place to spend four to five hours, with varied exhibits that could suit anyone and everyone. Well worth the seemingly high ticket price. A nice touch is that all exhibits have an "estimated time per visit" so you can plan accordingly.
