A presidio (from the Spanish, presidio, meaning "jail" or "fortification") is a fortified base established by the Spanish in areas under their control or influence. The term is derived from the Latin word praesidium meaning protection or defense. In the Americas, the fortresses were built to protect against pirates and hostile Native Americans, as well as colonists from enemy nations. In the Mediterranean and the Philippines, the presidios were outposts of Christian defense against Islamic raids. The presidios of Spanish-Philippines in particular, were centers where the martial art of Arnis de Mano was developed, combining Filipino, Latin-American and Spanish fighting techniques. Later in western North America, with independence, the Mexicans garrisoned the Spanish presidios on the northern frontier and followed the same pattern in unsettled frontier regions like the Presidio de Sonoma, at Sonoma, California and the Presidio de Calabasas, in Arizona. In western North America, a rancho del rey or king's ranch would be established a short distance outside a presidio. This was a tract of land assigned to the presidio to furnish pasturage to the horses and other beasts of burden of the garrison. Mexico called this facility "rancho nacional".Wikipedia

Presidio, Chicago Reviews - Write a Review
Been in the neighborhood for a 3 years. The best restaurant in the area. Great food. Great bar. This is our go to place for good service and great meals.
Brisket sandwich literally brought tears to my eyes it was so freaking delicious. Don't be deceived by it's comparatively low price tag. Also, Mindy's donuts and the dark and tan hot chocolate... honestly, if I died right now I'd be happy.
I've been here for brunch and was not impressed. Dinner was definitely better. Service overall is extremely slow....even if they're not busy.
Cocktails were great. Friend had a Manhattan and said it was the best he'd had in awhile. Had cheese and crackers, pretty good!
Delicious, quality food and drinks in upscale surroundings. The front bar gets super-busy and packed while the rear seating area is more tame. The service matches the wonderful array that they offer. I can't believe this is the same Bucktown that was overrun by drugs and gangs years ago. Worth the trip and street-parking fees (there is no free parking around there, another change from the cheap-old-days).
