India is known for its forts and fortresses. A gem of this grand collection is the Chitradurga Fort of Karnataka. This fortress ranges across many hills, giving the most picturesque views of the entire city. It was built in parts between the 17th and 18th centuries. The feudal chiefs of the Vijayanagar Empire are responsible for building it. They are the Rashtrakutas, Chalukyas, Hoysalas as well as the Nayakas of Chitradurga. With Haider Ali’s victory in 1779, the ownership changed and it went on to be passed on to his son, Tippu Sultan. The architecture of the fort is a beautiful amalgamation of all the different religions. The fort houses warehouses for grains, water reservoirs, a masjid and a citadel. Apart from these, the fortress has a total of 19 ancient temples, 18 in the upper fort and one large one in the lower fort. Two architectural beauties include the rainwater harvesting system which is said to have been so brilliant that the fort never had water shortage; and the other was the design, which is the seven concentric walls which make the passages which in turn lead to different parts of the fort. One of the most incredible sites of the state and the country, do visit this place!
