Overview of Forte Michelangelo

Fort Michelangelo strikes as the toughest structure on the coast of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Built to protect Port Civitavecchia in Rome, the fortress still stands strong. Michelangelo Buonarroti designed the main tower, and thus the fort is named after him. Between the 10th and 11th century, amidst the ruins of the city of Rome and the destroyed port, settlement started to adapt to the circumstances. The idea of the fort was initiated then. The current structure of the fort was built from 1508 to 1537. Shaped like a huge quadrilateral, four corner towers add to its glory. This is a must-visit for all history enthusiasts.
