Largo Da Portagem - Review

The name of the square has a historical context. Portagem is the Portuguese word for tolls. This square was the where goods coming in from the south of the city were taxed. It has a few highlights worth noting. It lies in the sight of Mondego River and the Santa Clara bridge. Architecturally, check out the 1926 Astoria Hotel and the Bank of Portugal Building. The statue in the square was sculpted by Costa Mota, and is of Joaquim António de Aguiar, an early 19th century prime minister of Portugal. The nearby Ferreira Borges street has some interesting traditional shops. Altogether, it’s a nice place to people-watch. Sometimes the nearby cafes and pastry shops spread tables and chairs out into the street. At night, the square is well lit.

Largo Da Portagem, Coimbra Reviews

  • Beautiful starting point of the city of Coimbra. From there you can go to Portugal dos pequenitos, by crossing the bridge. You can also from there visit the monastery of Santa Clara just a few min away from the portagem. There’s an old street on the left that goes up and despite being hard to go up on that street I would recommend doing it all as there is also the old walls from the city and it leads you to the university. UNESCO patrimony. Being that square you also have restaurants, cafes and all typical with typical food. Check on your right hotel Astoria as it is the oldest one in Coimbra. If go back to the street behind you (visconde da luz) and go straight you will be exactly Downtown. Typical cafes and food restaurants. The church where our first king is, is located at praça 8 de maio. Must see. From that square (largo da portagem) you can go cross the street, not bridge and go to your left for the city park. Great park and views. Enjoy!

  • Stunning. Worth walking across especially if you are going to visit the Monestary.

  • Nice view of the river.

  • Closed while gmaps said it was supposed to be opened

  • Very nice. Lots of cafes, bars, restaurants, monuments and shops all along the streets nearby and with a view to Mondego river.
