This historic public garden, built in 1849, is closely associated to the legends of the city. King Peter would come here to mourn his beloved Inês de Castro, who was only posthumously recognised as his wife. The garden’s name is derived from this legendary melancholy. Indeed, the atmosphere of the garden itself is peaceful and contemplative. Quite close to the university, it has become the favourite retreat for students, especially dating couples. By tradition, students leaving the university tend to leave a memento here. See the poems inscribed onto the rocks, written by these departing students. The garden also has some limited views of the city skyline and the Coimbra Stadium.
