Arcade Independence Square - Review

This complex is an interesting juxtaposition of facts. It looks like a mansion. It looks new, but was built in 1889 as an lunatic asylum. It is now located adjacent to where Sri Lanka was declared free. And it is now the most popular shopping, leisure and entertainment complex in the city. Fashion apparel, sports apparel, watches, electronics, restaurants and even a wax museum, of all things, are located here. There are over a dozen excellent restaurants. And an Empire cinema theatre. But what really sells this complex are it sheer good LOOKS. Everything is white and wood, brightly lit, decorated in colonial themes and utterly inviting. It feels like a villa-turned-shopping complex.

Arcade Independence Square, Colombo Reviews

  • A great place to meet up with friends and loved ones in the heart of Colombo. Has a wide variety of stores including several high-end clothing, electronics and food stores. Has an in-house cinema hall with the latest films. Has ample parking. Does seem a bit run down but facilities available are on par.

  • Beautifully renovated colonial building or rather a group of buildings. Nice greenery surrounding the area. The shops themselves mostly cater to the high end customers. The Japanese restaurant is quite good and the mini movie has fantastic recliner seats if you fancy a snooze in the AC.

  • A colonial type outfit building. It has restaurants, pub and few shops with of course international brands. Some one who is planning to visit this location must go during evening with preparing for walk or jog as in front of this arcade you get a long wonderful walking track. Ample parking available

  • This arcade is located beside Independence Square in Colombo and is a very popular destination for local people and tourists who are interested in 'top end' shopping and visiting some of the interesting cafes and restaurants in the vicinity. The arcade itself is a very pleasant place with white colonial style architecture, paved floors and surrounded by green space. You will find a reasonable array of retail outlets including international brands for clothing, technology and so on. The while exudes an atmosphere of modern living and is a shining example of the developments that have taken place in Colombo in recent years making it the vibrant Asian city that it is today.

  • Popular place in Colombo. Great place to hangout with friends, evening walks. There are many shops and a film hall also. Nice surrounding. Well maintained.
