Opened in 1936, the zoo has a lot of assets packed into a mere 10 hectares. There are at least 3000 animals, representing at least 300 species in total. The exhibits are quite straightforward, and divided into several sections. These are Primates (16 kinds of monkeys), Birds (flamingos, swans, ostriches, aquatic birds, migratory birds, raptors), a butterfly garden with 245 different species, an elephant area, about 32 species of reptiles including pythons, crocodiles and turtles, and Hoofed Animals (giraffes, zebras, rhinos, deer). Kids will love the petting area.

National Zoological Gardens Of Sri Lanka, Colombo Reviews - Write a Review
Very nice place to spend the whole day. Well developed now and larger carnivores are in open which is great and they look healthy. There could be more information about animals but still a good informative zoo. Restaurant quality is medium and there won't be a menu card even if there a menu there won't be available. I would still recommend this place. It's a well maintained zoo with a lot of animals.
Best place to spend a day with family and kids. Lots of animals , birds and reptiles. Several animal shows available starting from sea lion , elephant and bird shows. Various informatory facts are also shared. Kids play area also available for kids to spend their time. Renovations going on.
An amazing zoo. A lot of animals there to see. They even have anacondas 😱 with going there with the family. Children will definitely love the place as well as adults. Enjoyed the zoo very much. Was very cheap as well.
One of the oldest Zoos in Asia. Currently, Dehiwala Zoo houses 72 species of Mammals, 65 species of Birds, 31 species of Reptiles, 89 species of Fish, 03 families of Amphibians and 30 species of Butterflies etc. The total number of animals varies from 2500-3000 due to breeding and free living colonies of birds. Dehiwala Zoo has become famous among the visitors not only for collection of local and exotic animals but also for landscaping with lush greeneries. The Zoo supports and promotes conservation by breeding certain rare and endangered species through proper animal welfare.
One of the best zoo ever visited till date. Cleanliness at its best. Staffs are very respectfully and gets to you immediately. A must visit. Tour is incomplete without a visit at this zoo. Completely satisfied.
