A lot of hype went into the construction and opening of this market. It was kind of worth it. There idea behind this market was two-fold. One, to create a tourist interest. And two, to relocate the unlicensed vendors congesting up the area around Pettah. As a result you have about 92 trade stores selling everything from shoes, clothes, electronics, appliances, cheap jewellery, fruits and veggies and so on. There is also an excellent food court. In the weekends, you can rent a boat to take out into the water. It is a very tastefully decorated and intelligently designed space, welcoming and lively, always decorated with flowers, the promenade lined with trees and benches. It may be one of the best hangouts in the city.
Which is why it is unfortunate that thanks to the close proximity of the Beira lake, you can't get away from the terrible spell of pollution of algae. All the locals have learnt to tolerate it. You shall too.

Pettah Floating Market, Colombo Reviews - Write a Review
This place is good to have some rest after traversing the fort roads for the things you need to buy. I personally don't recommend this for food since it's not hygienic and kind of not worthy of the price. The clothing items are also relatively expensive.
Great concept and great place to visit. The only pleasant and calm place around the busy crowded Pettah. I think government administration need more attention to maintain this valuable place.
Even today I visited the place. Quite a nice place to be. Cheap food and some places with acceptable quality. The issue is with the beggers. It was unpleasant to evidence such people come to the tables while having meals. Even for a kind hearted person this would be the same as they keep asking for money saying their helplessness. It is advisable not to offer any money to them. If you really care buy some food for them. Dont encourage such people.
Very good view to tourist. It is a floating market. We can enjoy when we are shopping over the water
Its nice view. There are pedal boats if you wish. There are dinning places.
