Shri Ponnambalawaneswaram Kovil - Review

Usually Hindu temples explore with color. Not this one. It's a little surprising to see. The whole temple is made from grey granite from South India. The only splash of color on the outside are the bright palm trees lining the avenue to the entrance. As you enter, you'll see the color scheme on the inside is identical. But instead of palm trees, it's the vivid orange of garlands strung across demure looking statues inside their individual alcoves. The temple is at its liveliest during the annual january harvest festival of Thai Pongal, when Hindu devotees throng the place.

The temple is named after Gate Mudaliyar Arunachalam Ponnambalam, who began building the temple in 1856, and fell ill and passed away during his services to it.

  • One of the Hindu temple build with granite. It's isolation from the roads and other attractions gives peace of mind and a better ambience to practise spiritual knowledge. Build according to the scriptures makes it more attractive.

  • Peace and Serenity. The architecture is just magnificent. The temple is huge and you could spend a good hour or so !! #natnzin

  • It's a beautiful Hindu temple! Someone once said that it was built because the Dutch or Portuguese destroyed a Hindu temple to build a church just there, and when after that they had to face much abuse from the locals and so they agreed to build a Hindu Temple. It has a lot of that type of stone work. Supposedly the only Hindu Temple built by the colonisers. Worth a visit!

  • It was my pleasure to have the opportunity to visit this place full of magic. This was the most impressive hindu temple I have ever been to. The Hindu priest were so friendly to us. We stayed there for the Hindu Puja which I really enjoyed and I am still wearing the lines like a bracelet. Thank so much for building this great temple.

  • Very peaceful. Built of stone. Nice, calming environment.
