Under the soothing shade of magnificent Banyan trees stands Sri Lanka’s premier cultural institution- the Colombo national museum. To greet you on your ingress is a Buddha carved in stone which dates back to the 9th century and the enigmatic smile of the statue will surely mesmerize you.
The galleries displaying a huge collection of arts, carvings and statuary, a peek through the ancient past of the country is easily possible. Developed and maintained for about 150 years now, this gallery has rare findings not only from the antique era but also swords, guns and other paraphernalia from the colonial period.

The National Museum Of Colombo Reviews & Ratings
An informative and we'll maintained collection of artifacts. Descriptions and details are quite well written. Be aware the price for foreign visitors is 1000 rupees
Good place to know the history. But there should be AC in the museum, they are charging 1200 rupees per person, and that's quite high amount. Colombo is a hot place and it becomes very sweaty and hot inside the museum during noon time.
I had to drive 3 times to find the entrance. There isn't even a single board mentioning ENTRANCE sign. Guidance to one of the main places in colombo is really poor. Roads are turn around due to construction. You have to travel along way due to this to reach.
A gem! As a museum lover this one rates highly from others I've visited. Well organized and displayed in a beautiful historic landmark. Excellent price at 1000 Sri Lankan Rupees.
This museum is pretty original and provides a comprehensive story of the history of Sri Lanka though various art and artifacts. If you're not able to get to places like Sigiriya on your trip to Sri Lanka then the museum is able to provide you a glimpse of the countries historic sites and artifacts. A good way to spend half a day in Colombo for any history buff.
