The National Museum Of Colombo - Review
Under the soothing shade of magnificent Banyan trees stands Sri Lanka’s premier cultural institution- the Colombo national museum. To greet you on your ingress is a Buddha carved in stone which dates back to the 9th century and the enigmatic smile of the statue will surely mesmerize you.
The galleries displaying a huge collection of arts, carvings and statuary, a peek through the ancient past of the country is easily possible. Developed and maintained for about 150 years now, this gallery has rare findings not only from the antique era but also swords, guns and other paraphernalia from the colonial period.
There are fascinating 19th-century reproductions of English paintings of Sri Lanka, and an excellent collection of antique demon masks. The magnificent royal throne made for King Wimaladharma in 1693 as well as the 9th-century bronze Bodhisattva Sandal are a must-watch.

The National Museum Of Colombo, Colombo Reviews
Must visit place in Colombo of you are interested in history. Outside area is clean and well maintained. Cafeteria is not very good. Haven't had good impression when I got there. About the inside of the museum is very interesting. There are very large area to be covered. 15 areas are available to watch. Better to start early if you want to visit all of them. Take time and read descriptions to get better knowledge.
Very impressive. Excellent collection and collection is way above average for a museum in a developing nation. Professionally kept. My only concern is the absence of air conditioning, not just for the visitor’s comfort but for the preservation of artifacts. The natural history part do got “some” air but not fully. The Blue Whale skeleton is amazing and that alone is worth the visit. About the admission: You need TWO tickets, one for the museum and one for the Natural History section. Unless you just want to see one, make sure to buy a combine ticket as it is cheaper than buying two separate tickets. They don't make it clear there.
There is so many knowledge to gather and so much to see about the rich cultural and natural heritage of Sri Lanka. But as a mother of a toddler I give three stars considering facts like absence of air conditioning,(I believe the heat and humidity damages the artefacts too) absence of elevators, not being stroller/ wheelchair friendly at all. Could have improved with more lighting and ventilation, and an attractive souvenir shop as well.
It’s the national museum of Sri Lanka. There are a lot of historical congratulations of Buddha, old culture Sri Lankan village, history of the country, nice building, voluminous, nice arts, historic dresses and so on. There is nice green place in front. I think some body can spend 2 hrs time with pleasure. Should have AC.
This is the national museum of the country. The building it self is grand. But interiors look oldish and dark.Priceless piece of art lies in a gloomy hall without air conditioning or temperature and humidity control. The best thing is you get the chance to see true items, the worst thing is very poor setup, with too many displays in one place. They could do better.Change items on display leaving more space for visitors time to time, like many museums do. I love the collection but it need improvement, like cafe, toilets and lighting.
