The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the comune of Lenno (province of Como), Italy, overlooking Lake Como. It is located on the tip of a small wooded peninsula on the western shore of the south-west branch of Lake Como, not far from the Isola Comacina and is famous for its elaborate terraced gardens.

The villa was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. The two towers belong to the campanili of the convent church.

The Villa now belongs to the National Trust of Italy. Its grounds now form part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani.

A number of feature films have used the villa for location shooting, including A Month by the Lake (1995), Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002), and Casino Royale (2006).

Villa Del Balbianello, Como Reviews - Write a Review

  • I thoroughly enjoyed visiting this villa. Our guide Liza was engaging, informative and her English was perfect. The tour gives a really insightful understanding of what it would have been like to live here. The tour took us into numerous rooms including bedrooms/bath rooms. Most rooms are adorned by significant works of art and antiquities. The views of the lake and surrounds from in and out of the villa are sublimely beautiful and romantic. Arriving and departing by boat capped off a wonderful experience. A must see!

  • Very cool for Star Wars or James Bond fans. So glad we paid extra for the house tour. Essential if any interest in Guido Monzino or exploration in general. Couple of secret passageways too. If you want a house tour come here. Garden walk is lovely but small and Villa Carlotta far better if more interested in the gardens.

  • Visiting the villa was an amazing experience. You should choose the guided tour without doubt. The building is enormous, every room has its own story. The garden is gorgeous with a great view of the lake and the hills around.

  • We didn't know you had to pay to visit the Villa. So that's what this 'review' will be about. Price is quite high. You can choose to visit the garden and Villa, or just the garden. For students, the garden is €8, €10 for adults. If you want to visit garden with villa, it's double the price of the garden. Also quite a walk to get there. Bring some water with you, especially on a hot day.

  • Yes the Villa is breathtaking but, the story behind it will blow you away. You can walk the Italian style garden and about an hour guided tour through the Villa. When your done you can take a water taxi back to Lenno or walk about 15/20 min back to Lenno dock. The walk up is a fair incline but not too strenuous.
