The Villa del Balbianello is a villa in the comune of Lenno (province of Como), Italy, overlooking Lake Como. It is located on the tip of a small wooded peninsula on the western shore of the south-west branch of Lake Como, not far from the Isola Comacina and is famous for its elaborate terraced gardens.

The villa was built in 1787 on the site of a Franciscan monastery for the Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini. The two towers belong to the campanili of the convent church.

The Villa now belongs to the National Trust of Italy. Its grounds now form part of the Grandi Giardini Italiani.

A number of feature films have used the villa for location shooting, including A Month by the Lake (1995), Star Wars: Episode II Attack of the Clones (2002), and Casino Royale (2006).

Villa Del Balbianello Reviews & Ratings

  • The last way to the villa can is be reached on foot. If you have a disabled person with you, you need to be strong to push the wheelchair. During mid-may the place was not too crowded. 20€ per person for both, garden and villa is way overpriced.

  • It's somewhat expensive for both the grounds and the house. The house is interesting and worth seeing if you are planning on seeing the gardens and have the time. I wouldn't recommend going out of your way. Also it's a little bit of a hike from the ferry terminal and the water taxi from the town wasn't super dependable the day we went.

  • A very pretty garden. Didn't go into the villa. Gardens alone were 10 euro. Villa + garden 20 euros but we never felt like we wanted to go inside the villas. Quite a walk from the gate to the actual villa. 20 mins with some uphill. Closes 6pm so make sure you go with at least an hour to spend there.

  • The villa is breathtaking and we had no idea what this tour would entail but we are thrilled we did it. Our brilliant guide showed us around this amazing villa telling us the history and that of the final owner Guido Monzino who was an explorer and mountaineer donated to the FAI upon his death. The villa has been the setting for at least 3 movie as.. what a magnificent home

  • Really too expensive. very small. It is nice but guided tour is mandatory and there's not often . 20 eur for that doesn't worth it. Even the best and biggest museums in the world are not so expensive (Versailles Castle, le Louvres, British museum, MET etc.. ) such a waste of time and money
