Christian IV was the longest reigning King of Denmark- ruling from1588 to 1648 and is remembered as one of the most ambitious rulers of the country. The 30 Years’ war was a turning point in Copenhagen’s story and this was when the country’s finances were heavily compromised even though Germany suffered double the damages. The king also renamed Oslo as Christiania till the 1920’s.
Like many other iconic figures, Copenhagen keeps it history and stories alive through its art and this statue is not different.
The statue was created by Vilhelm Bissen and pays homage to Christian IV and all that he did for Denmark. It depicts the King standing tall on a pedestal with a number of yellow-orange buildings that form an interesting yet juxtaposed background. Don’t forget to click a few pictures with the statue during a casual walk through the city.
