The Church of Our Saviour forms an intrinsic part of the beginning of Denmark’s absolute monarchy post the wars in 1660 when the country lost its southern boundaries.

Christian V, the son of King Frederik III was born in the country as an absolute monarch and to commence with his absolute right, he had to built a grand building. The Church of Our Saviour was thus built in 1695 in true Dutch Baroque style on a sturdy granite foundation with Tuscan pilasters, sandstone cornices, a vaulted roof covered with glazed tiles and beautiful arched windows that multiple the church’s splendour.

The Church’s tower was added in the mid 18th century and is the highlight of the place. The towers, standing tall at 90 meters, have clock faces attached to an interior clockwork. The spires of the towers have a timber frame and consist of 400 steps (150 of which can be seen from outside) with beautiful golden handrails that add to its beauty.

Other highlights include:

  • Tessins's altarpiece that replicates a scene of the Garden of Gethsemane and depicts Jesus with two angels- one of the them carrying a gold chalice.
  • The Church Organ that replicates the sound heard in the church 300 years ago! The organ has 400 pipes and is loved for its intricately carved wood work.
