Located close to the famous Stroget street, Grabrodretorv was named after a Franciscan friary that existed at the square during the 1230’s. The friary was closed in 1530 but the building was later used as a town jail and later was converted to a prison. In the 1720’s, a fire destroyed all the buildings around the square and was later shattered by the British Bombardment during the 1807 Battle of Copenhagen.
The current square dates back to 1841 and in 1968, the place became a vehicle free zone and since then has been one of the most loved places in the city. What is most striking about the square are the colourful buildings that line it, a beautiful Plane tree, a granite fountain and the variety of restaurants and cafes that sit cosily in the charming setting. The place is also popular for hosting the annual Copenhagen Jazz Festival. Come here to touch a part of Copenhagen’s history while sipping on a cup of coffee!
