The Kastelskirken dates back to 1704 and celebrated its 300th anniversary in the year 2004, making this is one of the oldest buildings in the city. The church itself, due to its location in the city’s military barracks, makes for quiet an unexpected visit. The place also served as a prison in the past but today, its humble interiors with baroque embellishments and lime yellow masonry with beautiful tiles, is sure to make you fall in love with architecture and art.
The main altar consist of 3 paintings arranged one below the other and is accentuated by a gilded golden frame. The painting in the middle is called ‘the Worship of the Shepherds’ that is identical to the altar in the original church and dates back to the 17th century while the picture at the bottom (the Last Supper) dates back to the 18th century. The altarpiece also has a beautiful painting created by Lucie Ingemann that dates back to the 19th century.
Other highlights include elements like the Organacade, a Pulpit, a Tabernacle, a Deaffront and the Kirkeskib mini ship crafted by Gorm Clausen in 1930.

Great historical site that is preserved very well. Danish soldiers on duty at this active post. Great views of surrounding city.
You can walk it after the little mermaid and sit on the grass with some lunch!
