One of the most beautiful fountains seen around Copenhagen, the Stork Fountain was a silver wedding anniversary gift for the Crown Prince Frederik (also known as Frederik VIII) and Crown Princess Louise. The fountain dates back to the late 19th century and by the time the mid 20th century approached, the fountain was popularly a part of local traditions.

Most of the iconic building in the city were built after arranging a competition for their designs and this fountain is no different. Edvard Petersen and Vilhelm Bissen were the winners of the competition held to make a fountain worthy of a royal gift and in 1894, this fountain was opened to the public. Since then the fountain has been the inspiration behind a popular protest song and the place was a common venue for protest events.

The design of the fountain consists of a 9-sided basin that receives water from a bronze bowl on top of it separated by a pedestal that has depictions of aquatic plants, frogs and 3 large birds. Visit the place to see yet another historic site of the city merged into its present day weave.

  • A simple fountain, that high school graduates dance around each year.

  • A nice place to sit down and relax a little while taking a walk at the street.

  • Excuse me? It's a fountain! Don't expect too much from a fountain. But indeed, it looks good, but that's about it.

  • It's a very beautiful square and every time I go to Copenhagen I must be here. Five stars without thinking.

  • Nice landmark good for pictures if you can get a chance and is a local rendezvous point
