The Den Frie Udstillingsbygning was established in the late 19th century and is the oldest artists’ association in Denmark. The first ever exhibition of the association was arranged in 1891, showcasing around 100 art pieces created by 18 artists that included some of most iconic names like Peder Severin Kroyer, Julius Paulsen and Kristian Zahrtmann. The exhibition was moved to the Aborreparken in 1898 and its design was influenced by Egyptian and Greek temples- something that truly sets it apart from other buildings. Later the building was moved to the present day location of Oslo Plads in 1913. Today, the place is as much a piece of art as the exhibitions it hosts!
The association is proud of showcasing artists other than those recommended by cultural authorities- giving this place a certain edge over other exhibition halls and art galleries. With its liberal attitude, you can see the art works of some of the best contemporary artists in the country along with international artists.
