Achilleion - Review

Built in the 19th century by the Empress of Austria (lovingly known as Sissy), the Palace was the result of the Empress’s love of Greek Mythology and hence the palace followed the theme of Achilles.

Following the death of her only Son, the Empress put her mind and soul into getting the palace built. After her death the palace was abandoned during the World Wars and after extensive repairs, today the place is a museum open for the Public.

Highlights include:

  • Chapel
  • Detailed paintings form the 19th century
  • Embellished paintings on the ceiling
  • Majestic central staircase
  • Beautiful painting of the Empress when she was 21
  • The adjoining garden

Anyone who visits the place is sure to think they have stepped into Greek Mythology. The museum is perfect if you truly love art and history, merged seamlessly!

  • Worth a visit! The best part for us were the gardens, the great views, and the gigantic statue of Achilles looking out. Cool to think of Sissi enjoying her time here, but also the other functions the building has had over the years. Also fun to know several movies recorded scenes here, such as a casino scene in a James bond movie. I'd recommend to go when you're in the area!

  • This is a palace which has been converted into a museum. There is an entry fee. There is a very interesting background story to the former resident Empress Elisabeth but unfortunately not enough explanation is given to the uses of the palace nor the Empress with the included audio tour recording. The layout and which room or piece to see next is also not well thought out. Still worth checking out while in Corfu if you have the benefit of a rental car.

  • I could understand why Sissi wanted to spend the latter years of her life in this place. It is truly a heaven, a beautiful getaway for a broken heart. The villa as well as its garden is elegantly decorated with Greek mythology motifs. There's a story behind every corner. The villa is definitely Corfu's finest despite of being too touristic.

  • Not bad. Sure, it is a place worth seeing, but expect nothing more than a nice museum-villa building with some nice statues and other items. The The garden is nice too and the Achilles statue there is awesome. If you consider traveling here just for this, then don't. If you are around and consider visiting. Then go for it.
