Located right close to the Tonkawa Falls, the Tonkawa Petroglyphs is yet another popular attraction in Crawford. Drawing its name from the Tonkawa Indians who inhabited the area for centuries, the Tonkawa Petroglyphs are a type of petroglyphs etched into the creek bed. Visible only during summer when the water levels are low, these drawings are said to have both Indian and Spanish influences.
Tonkawa Petroglyphs Reviews & Ratings
Cool! I’ve been looking for them but didn’t know exactly where to look. I found them!! They are actually a little further “upstream” than what is shown on the map. I went down that side road and found an opening in the trees that lead down to the creek bed. I pulled over and parked in that little driveway looking road to the right and once I was at the creek bed, I headed south towards the falls. I took the right path when I came up on a fork in the creek bed. I started finding petroglyphs within the first 4-5 yards.
You will have to search the creek bed to find the petroglyphs. The Google Map marker is very precise. I have heard there are many of them but I was only able to find about seven different carvings. Arrive when it hasn't been raining recently or they will be in water. Maybe even bring a small broom or brush as the carvings may be covered up with debris from the seasonal creek. Overall, a nice additional activity if you are visiting Tonkawa Falls nearby. A fun little adventure!
