For outdoor enthusiasts, history buffs, artists, and photographers the Mare Island Historic Shoreline would offer a unique experience. Spread across an area of 215 acres, there’s a lot that you can do here. It’s a hidden gem and the views from the top of Carquinez Strait and Mare Island Naval station are worth the short, easy hike. The cemented road trail would take you to the top where the ghost ship is. It is the best place to visit if you wish to know more about the history of the Mare Island. Yearly events like Flyway Festival, Nightmare Island, nature walks and many other such events help to raise money for the preserve. The place runs purely on donation so make sure to make a contribution while you are there.

Mare Island Shoreline Heritage Preserve Reviews & Ratings

  • Great paved hike to take the toddler. With a great view when you get to the top. Perfect place to get those awesome selfies with your kid. :)

  • Delightful place for a nature walk, birding, or viewing maritime and naval history! Bring your own water. Facilities are limited but make time to visit the Visitor Center to see the exhibits there.

  • This was SO fun! Our whole family did the walk/hike. Most of path is paved, except for a few off-shoot trails. We brought our grandson in the stroller. Be sure to bring water. Lovely views of the bay. So much history here. An 1800's cementary. There is a register of all the people buried there in the mailbox outside of the gate. Very interesting and lots of fun!! Highly recommend.

  • Great place for a hike, bike ride, view, bird watching, primative camping, yurt camping, historical veteran's cemetery, and conversation. Myrna Hayes is a fantastic preserve manager, and very knowledgeable of it's history, and plant and animal life. City of Vallejo you have a hidden gem there. Preserve it!

  • Mare island has some very beautiful walking trails and has different events going on throughout the year. The reserve also allows you to camp on site. I have personally walked up and down all the trails and I love all the wide life that you will find throughout your walk.
