The word Barigui has an indigenous origin referring to ‘river thorny fruit’. The park is spread over the land belonging to Martins Mateus Leme, which was turned into a park in 1972 by the then mayor Jaime Lerner.
Due to its proximity with the city centre, it is the most popular park in Curitiba. The three woods housed in the park comprise the native primary forests and secondary forests that also serve as a habitat to animals like egrets, cavies, lapwings, tico-ticos, skunks and others.
The park is one of the key elements providing fresh air to the city and also helps to regulate the flood of Rio Barigui which was pretty prevalent in some lower parts of Curitiba.
Visit the park for recreation or plan a BBQ picnic; you are all set to have a great time! Walking areas, exhibition halls hosting fairs, lake are some other highlights of the park!
