Iron Mountain Road is a road that comes on US 16A. It is a picturesque road which passes from the outskirts of Custer. Being a part of the Peter Norbeck National Byway, this road gives you an opportunity to see some extremely lovely views of Mount Rushmore which are framed inside granite rock tunnels. You will come across three such tunnels, which offer different kind of views on this road.
Iron Mountain Road also consists of three pigtail bridges. These corkscrew like structures are made in such a way that they curl and pass over so it negotiates for the major drop in elevation by still preserving the natural highlights of this road.
The Peter Norbeck National Scenic Byway also winds through Custer State Park and along Needles Highway before ending at Mount Rushmore National Memorial.
