The Chamera Dam is the most important component of the hydroelectricity project of Himachal Pradesh. It was built during 1985-1994. This dam is situated on the river Ravi.
After this dam was constructed, hospitals at Banikhet and khairi were set up especially for first-aid services along with a dispensary at Sundla which was established by NHPC to provide medical services to the families of the project employees. Various medical camps were also set up to provide regular and free medicines and check-up sessions for the people living here. Also, the locals living in the project area are provided with fresh water facilities also. All these measures have highly increased the number of healthy people and turn has reduced the number of epidemics and diseases here.
There were more than 1000 people who lost their shelter due to the acquisition of the project land. But, there were quite a few rehabilitation plan set up for these homeless people and they were also given enough compensation. They were also given free medical and education facilities.
Many developmental measures were taken up following this project. There has been a sharp increase in the rate of employment due to the rise of the mining, aquaculture and the tourism industry. Many homeless people were employed here which in turn increased the quality of living by reducing the rate of unemployment.
The main attraction here is the beautiful artificial lake built as the reservoir to this dam. This is a destination for boating and other water sports because of the clear waters without any presence of aquatic life in it. The other sports activities here are rowing, motor boating, paddling, sailing, canoeing, angling and kayaking. All kinds of modern amenities are provided by the tourism department to promote this place in all ways.
