Bengal Natural History Museum - Review

The Bengal Natural History Museum is located near The Mall, the central attraction of Darjeeling. Built in 1915, it is a large gallery for the exhibition of the natural historical artifacts of the region. The museum is mainly created for the preservation of specific flora and fauna. The museum contains an amazing combination of Himalayan and Bengali fauna. More than 4000 specimens coexist in harmony. Bird species, reptiles, and other animals of the Eastern Himalayas are displayed with lots of features. In case you want to know more you should ask the staff you are pretty knowledgeable and willing to guide the visitors.

There are butterfly and beetle sections which are extremely beautiful and not to be missed. Mineral forms of many stones are also displayed. It is 1 km away from the railway station and it provides various related information about the flora and the fauna to the students who come here at a regular interval. The big heritage and culture of the museum is very touching and one can easily feel a kind of kinship with it after visiting the museum. The central government has taken precautionary steps in its preservation.

  • This was one of my favorite local/Tourist point in Darjeeling. This is one of the most amazing part of this journey that I got the opportunity to watch and see the birds so closely who are almost a century old. Yes the famous Bengal museum was constructed in the year 2010 and there are many pet's and animals available there who's real body is available. They have kept and arranged everything so beautifully that you cannot ignore it's worth. Must go place worth.

  • Decent collection of (stuffed) flora and fauna from Bengal state. But, the "history" part is lacking - they should show how the natural history of this area evolved through time. Even a few fossils would be good. Photos not allowed.

  • Bengal Natural History Museum is really an amazing place to visit in Darjeeling...The Structure of Animals and Plants were made so beautifully such that they were seeming to be real...It's a great museum depicting about Bengal Nature ... It's alongside the Mountaineering Institute... People usually skips it but I think it's a decent place to visit...

  • A MUST VISIT PLACE FOR CHILDREN. EXCELLENT COLLECTION OF STUFF ANIMALS AND BIRDS ALONG WITH INSECTS AND BUTTERFLY. INTERNAL LIGHTS AT SOME PLACES ARE VERY LOW MAKING PHOTOGRAPHY DIFFICULT.

  • It is a fantastic museum inside the zoo campus and near to Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Bundle ticket available at main entrance. It is a very nice and small museum. Photography inside the museum is prohibited. It is very popular to the tourists visiting to Darjeeling. People usually spends half an hour here.
