Situated close to the Red Fort, this wholesale market has been serving spices to the residents, retailers and is also a common tourist destination in Old Delhi for the foreign tourists to visit. A walk through this market will lead to a sensory delightful experience full of smell and color of the spices and the cries of the merchants. According to the historical records, this market started in the 17th century and has continued till date! It was built in the year 1650 by Fatehpuri Begum, one of the wives of Shah Jahan. There are few shops which have still maintained the names – “Chawal Wale 13”, “21 Number ki Dukaan”, “15 Number ki Dukaan” and many more since the time from when they were first set up. Ranging from exotic to regular, dryfruits to herbs, this market truly deserves to be the biggest spice market of Asia.
