Delhi is known for its Mughal heritage that reflects through its age old architecture, ruins and Old Dilli area. The Tughlaqabad fort was built by Ghiyathu'd-Din Tughluq (1321-25) as the third city of Delhi. This fort was built at a time of extreme political unrest and danger of Mongol attack from the North western borders of the Empire. This fort is divided into two parts, the citadel and palaces along the southern walls forming one unit and the city to the north the other. Although this section might come across as well preserved and still intact, the city-portion is, however, in extreme ruins.Ghiyathu'd-Din's tomb has been built across the main entrance of Tughluqabad. Owing to its color and form of construction, this tomb retains some of the characteristics of Khalji architecture. A fine example of Indo-Islamic architecture, this fort inspires awe and wonder at the lost past!
