The Derinkuyu Underground City is an ancient multi-level underground city situated in the Derinkuyu district. Extending to a depth of approximately 60 meters, the underground city is large enough to provide shelter to about 20, 000 people. This city is a living example of the advanced thought of the people residing here in the ancient times. It has all amenities like stables, refectories, storage rooms, cellars, oil presses, chapels. There is a spacious barrel vaulted ceiling room said to be used for religious schools. Opened since 1969, it is truly a fascinating place to explore.
