Originally opened in 1841 as the Farmers Market in Detroit devoted to hay and wood sales. Through the years as the market grew sheds were built and in 1891 the Farmer’s Market moved to its present location and was renamed Eastern Market. Stalls rented by farmers were decorated with murals of produce and livestock and have now become Eastern Market logos.
Here you will find stalls selling a mix of produce, bread, sweets, coffee, meat sticks, cheese, flowers, baked goods, fruits, vegetables, homemade jams, maple syrups, locally produced speciality food products, meat and sometimes the occasional goose or rabbit.
Although all days are good to visit, Saturdays are exceptional with fresh produce coming in and more stalls opened. The market is open all around the year but the selections and crowds are bigger from May-October. Don’t miss the speciality stores on the market’s perimeter. During peak season there is also a Tuesday market and a Sunday market specialising in Michigan made goods. Also visit the nearby art galleries like Inner State Gallery, Riopelle, Trinosophes Project and the Red Bull House of Art.
