The Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA) was formed with the aim of preserving and promoting Tibet’s tradition of performing arts. Formed under the guidance of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, TIPA was established in August 1959 to safeguard the traditional performing arts of Tibet. Since then, the institute has been spreading awareness about Tibetan culture and civilization. Highlights include the annual Shoton Opera Festival, a 9 day long traditional Tibetan Opera (Lhamo). Each Lhamo can last up to 6 hours.
