The Dindigul Fort, also referred to as Dindigul Malaikottai is a seventeenth century hill fort that was built by Madurai Nayak. The Nayakas erected the fortress on a prominently elevated place that overlooked the valley so as to safeguard their country from the army of Mysore. But, Haider Ali rebuilt the fort as this was used as a launching pad to attack the British who eventually did capture the fort. The Dindigul Fort on this day is open to the public and upon visiting; one would be able to see the abandoned temple on the peak along with a few cannons that have been sealed up with the balls inside. Amongst the temples, the central shrine is noteworthy for its exemplary architecture.
