Covering an area of 64 hectares the Rombenpark Botanical Garden dates back to 1820 and has survived the World War II. In its trying history, the place witnessed the death of 289 anti-fascists who were killed by the Nazis.
Today only the refurbished greenhouse and the ice cellar remain from the original structure but with its sprawling green terrain that is home to an astounding 4500 species of plants, the botanical garden has become one of the most loved green spaces around the city. The garden is divided into small sections including a perennial garden, a section for medicinal plants, a terrace lined with beautiful palm trees, 4 greenhouses that care for succulents, tropical plants and flowering plants and a beautiful herb garden.
The stunning landscape with a serene pond, beautiful pathways that takes you through the park and the colourful array of flowers including Rhododendrons and Primroses, add romance to the air. The view of Red Brooks from here is a surreal sight with the water of the small tributaries of the Schondelle creek turning a stark rustic red colour. There are plenty of places to have a seat or have a small picnic spread while the pond itself is lovely to walk around and to spot small turtles. If you like rustic places with less crowd come here to spend an entire afternoon. The Café Orchidee is an open café where you can stop by for a coffee or a quick bite.
