The Hohensyburg Castle has one of the oldest history in the country. The site of the castle dates back to the Neolithic Era. A castle was built by the lords of Seiburg on what was a former Saxon refuge and was conquered by the Franks in the 8th century. This castle provide to be a vantage point since its overlooked the entire area near the confluence of the Ruhr river and the Lenne river.
The current castle was built as a restoration to the original castle in the early 12th century from the Ruhr sandstone that was destroyed partially in the late 13th century. Today, the remaining structure includes a residential section, the wall fortifications around the complex and courtyard. The Emperor Wilhelm monument is built in honour of Kaiser-Wilhelm-Denkmal) who was titled as the German Emperor during the Franco-Prussian War. Today, people hike to the monument to see the stunning landscape around the hill including the confluences of the two rivers and to admire the old construction of the castle itself.
