The coking plants of the mines Hansa , Westhausen and Germania covered the main industry. However, in the late 1920’s, the Kokerei Hansa replaced these small run-down mines with 65 ovens in its first two batteries and 80 ovens in its third and fourth batteries that were added to the plant in the early 1940’s.

The anthracite for making the coke was obtained form the collieries around the Ruhr region. With the closing of the coal-mining industry, the plant along with the neighbouring factories was shut down in 1992 and the entire area was converted to a heritage industrial site.

Highlight of the place include:

• A vintage condensate separator
• The compressor hall
• The cooling tower that can be spitted even from a distance

Today, you can take a walk around the plant with a guided tour that will give you a brief synopsis about the history of the place and its economic and industrial importance to the entire region. The place also has an exhibition space where workshops are arranged by the Foundation for Industrial Heritage Management and the Historical Culture and the artlab21 Institute for Art Development.
