The St. Petri Ev. Stadtkirche was built in the early 14th century and along with the Reinoldikirche (St. Reinold church) and the Protestant Church of St. Mary, forms one of the most popular medieval structures in the city. The cross- saddle roofing, the church spire that stands at a height of 60 meters and the minimal yet sturdy sandstone construction are easily seen as you take a walk around the building.

The highlight of the church is the main altar called the Golden Wonder of Westphalia that is placed behind a glass wall. The gothic winged altar dates back to 1521 and consist of 36 pictures when folded while in its unfolded form you can see a detailed art work of small gilded sculptures. The vaulted ceiling, high arched layout of the nave and the number of statues placed on the side walls along with the open space, wooden floor and the absence of traditional church seats, is quite a breath-taking sight. The church has survived the World War II and with minor restoration work, it still preserves the architecture and timeless art pieces. When in Dortmund, do try to catch a live music performance here.
