The Dresden State Art Collection is a collection of artwork, dispersed in different museum across Dresden, Saxon. It’s one of the oldest and most impressive museum institutions in the world, with artwork dating back to the 16th century. The Collection comprises of twelve museums, most of which are within the walls of the Royal Palace, the Zwinger and the Albertinum. These collections have been capturing the hearts of both art lovers and artists the world over, and house some of the most famous paintings in history.

The Saxon emperors were greatly fond of things artistic and beautiful, as is evident in the construction of their palaces. The Electors and Kings had vast collections of paintings, statues, porcelain figurines and various other pretty antiquities. It is the artwork from these collections that are mostly on display today, as well as more contemporary additions. In fact, it was August I who created the electoral art chamber in 1560, where art was stored within the castle. The Elector and his successors were reat patrons of art, not only building up a fine collection but also exhibiting them for a select few to view.

The Kunstsammlungen is a state owned enterprise and this association includes twelve museums across Dresden. Those visiting the great castle Zwinger will be treated to the Old Masters Painting Gallery, the Royal Cabinet of Mathematical and Physical Instruments and the Porcelain Collection. The great walls of the Royal Palace safeguards the fascinating Collection of Prints, Drawing and Photographs, the famous Green Vault, with all its treasures, the awe inspiring Armory and the Coin Cabinet. The Albertinum, up on Bruhl’s Terrace, is home to the New Masters Gallery and the world famous Sculpture Collection. Lovers of artisan crafts will be enthralled by the Arts and Crafts Museum nestled within the Pillnitz Palace grounds. There are also two ethnographic museums, two art libraries and an art fund that complete the collection. Most of these buildings are located in the heart of Dresden.

One might wonder why all this art isn’t under a single roof but the sheer size of the collection does not allow that. Plus, after the bombing of Dresden during the Second World War, all the artwork was dispersed in order to keep them safe and intact. Numerous works of art were destroyed or lost during this time. Thankfully, much of it was saved and kept in pristine condition. The collection varies from primitive art to contemporary art. There is a comprehensive archive of Gerhard Richter's work that draws in many fans of the artist. The porcelain on display is both German and Asian and there are numerous other highlights spread through the different collections. Viewing this collection is the best possible way to get a nice, big bite of German history. Whether it’s the art or the artist, each collection has a colourful story and a vivid past. Even the buildings that house the artwork are masterpieces themselves, with olden day architecture creating a fantastic visual treat for the contemporary art lover. Also, visit the popular attractions in the city by following Dresden itinerary 1 day.
