Urquhart Castle, Drumnadrochit Reviews

  • Love the visitor centre here.. Its made very accessible for wheelchair users and if you have problems walking to far then you can borrow a mobility scooter. The information is laid out well and gives a great feeling of what it world have been like. The film is also well worth a watch.

  • We took the boat and tge visit so both were 20 £. The ruins are spectacular with lots of descriptive signs so in order to truly appreciate it, you need to give it some times. Many paths so its really easy to navigate. Once you finish exploring, you could always walk up to the visitor center and from there to the parking lot if needed (2 stories up)

  • Nice place for a couple of hours (up to half a day). But entry charges apply: £28 for a family ticket. Located just off the A82 between Fort Augustus and Inverness, it makes for a good break from the outdoor treks hikes and climbs. A very busy tourist destination - with designated coach and (free) car parking. To point out the extent of tourism: This is one of the few places where notice boards are put up displaying the exchange rate between Euros & Sterling... If you hold membership to The English Heritage (or Scottish equivalent) there is a concession on entry fees. Not so for The National Trust members. On a good day, there are spectacular views over Loch Lommond... truly magnificent. If you are keen on history, they screen a 10- minute film on the castle's journey over time. Plenty of steps to manoeuvre: not suitable for persons with limited mobility. As with most places of its kind, an overpriced gift shop is strategically placed near the entrance/ exit. Would I recommend it to others? Definitely Yes. Would I visit again? Not in the next 5 years..

  • The castle, while extremely famous, is very small. I immedately knew I did not want to go in after seeing it form the parking lot: you could tell that it was literally about 5 minutes to go through the entire castle. While it looks nice from the outside (and famous for it), there is not much to do when you go inside. Just take a few pictures from the parking lot and you will be happy.

  • From the parking lot, this castle might not look like much - ruins on the edge of the famous Loch Ness. You enter through the visitor center and after an 8-minute intro video (with great history) you go through to the castle itself. In the busy season (ending late August) it’s heaving, but after this it gets calmer. The castle is well presented - easily accessible paths and informative signs. But, I recommend finding one of the guides. If they say to you “Any questions?” you must say “Yes”! We spoke with Graham for nearly 30 minutes and he gave us an amazing historical account of the castle and the surrounding area. They are so knowledgeable and eager to share their knowledge with you - it’s worth it! Thank you Graham!
