The GPO or general Post Office of Dublin is an interesting sight to see. Being situated in the O’Connell Street, it is a wonderful example of Georgian architecture. The six huge pillars in the front of the building make it an imposing structure. Interestingly it has also become a symbol of the failed Easter Rising that took place in 1916 in Ireland. The rather grave history and imposing architecture make it a historic place.
But it is exactly this history and architecture that has made the place so important in Dublin. Although it is a GPO, it is still a famous tourist attraction in Dublin. Many visitors attend the building to have a look at this grand marvel. The General Post Office is surrounded by trees adding to its archaic beauty. It is a heritage sight in Ireland. The three statues made of rock at the top of the building are grand and picturesque. The General Post Office is made purely with marble and stones found in the mountains.
There’s a petite museum in the building that is rich with the history of the Irish postal service.
- The GPO is not a traditional tourist spot but is extremely important in relation to the history of the city.
